How the Chicago Cubs Helped Me Score a Gig ![]() Like many Santa Feans, I love to walk in the woods in the mountains, and that was what I was doing last Thursday, hiking on a trail in the early morning. Birds were still flitting, and the sun had not fully risen high enough to shine into the piney canyon where I was exploring. Towering Ponderosa, stubby Gambel oaks, and aspens that still clung to their golden leaves flanked the trail. The morning started chilly, but by the time I was halfway I was shedding my sweaters, and wearing a colorful shawl over my tank top. ![]() The woods were peaceful and still and I enjoyed the solitude, reaching the rushing mountain stream before turning back. On my return trek, the morning was brighter and warmer and more hikers – mostly tourists – were on the trail. I rounded a corner and encountered a couple, a dad and his daughter, who were studying a map. They had just concluded that they were on the wrong trail, but I assured them that if they continued on, they would reach Tesuque Creek. We got to talking, as people often will on the trail, and it turned out that they were from Chicago, as I was. ![]() And naturally, we had to rejoice about the Cubs, who had just cinched the National League pennant, and we joked how so many fans in Santa Fe were wearing Cubs gear. I had to laugh, as I told them how I was wearing my Cubs cap and striped jersey while I did my collage demo at the Railyard on Sunday. ![]() At that, the woman gasped and said, “What are you doing on Wednesday night?” I said I was free, so Alicia, who is the Public Program Coordinator of the Center for Contemporary Arts Santa Fe – the CCA – offered me a gig. The CCA has been hosting an event for the past few months: FARMS, FILMS, FOOD - A Santa Fe Celebration. Wednesday’s event was the debut of two films - SEED and SEASON, with the other mainstays of this happening…chef demo, food trucks, and environmental grassroots groups, and art projects. The artist who had been scheduled was unexpectedly unavailable, and so Alicia had an opening for a ready and able artist – me! ![]() So, on Wednesday, I was at the CCA, with my scissors and glue - happily cutting and pasting. I was working on a piece I was creating just for that night. Since the theme was Food from the Farm, I decided to honor the fruits of the season. I met a lot of groovy folk at the event. Thank you Alicia Piller for the opportunity! Thank you Angie Rizzo for being the CCA on-site help! So, did the Chicago Cubs work their magic for me in Santa Fe? Maybe so. It's my story and I'm sticking to it! ![]() And last week I was able to help a friend prepare for her first solo exhibit. Emerging Artist Bridget Steed has opened her exhibit “Ancestors and Origins” at Mother Roots Gallery in the Baca Street Arts District. The show is up till the end of December, so if you are in the area (say for cappuccino at Counter Culture) do stop in and see them – colorful and powerful acrylic canvases. ![]() Last night, the Cubs won the World Series, and I had tears in my eyes as I watched the fans at Wrigley Field singing their hearts out, “Go Cubs Go!” On Sunday, I will be wearing my old vintage Cubs cap – a niftygifty from a game in the Eighties - while I cut and paste in the Railyard. Come and join me to celebrate, and yes, there will be treats! Go Cubs Go! Peace and Love! Deco
