Summer in Santa Fe is a season of festivals – this week the city is celebrating Spanish Market. Traditional arts – like the carving and painting of Santos, tinwork, and straw-weaving – can be found in the Plaza. Modern media and edgier subjects are featured in the Contemporary Hispanic Market on Lincoln Avenue. And I, having no Andalusian ancestry, will be setting up my usual space in the air conditioned pavilion at Paseo and Guadalupe, the Santa Fe Railyard Artisans Market, Sunday 10 am to 4 pm. I will be working on my new piece and displaying original collages and posters and prints and cards for sale.
Last Sunday brought many out of town visitors to the city, including several from Louisiana. They came to the Market and watched me work on my latest collage piece. One of the original Autumnal Haiku series, “Arroyo, Early Morning” is speeding its way to Louisiana. This series of colorful landscapes features scenes of autumn in Northern New Mexico – at least how I see it. I embed a haiku which I write especially for each piece.
Posters and cards and prints found new homes as well; the pear card collection continues to be popular. And over at Ohori’s Coffee, my show “Across the Universe” will be on display for three months. This show features my collage depictions of planets and galaxies. I will be swapping out pictures from time to time – already have installed a new one to replace one that sold last week. Enjoy a good cup of joe and take time to absorb the atmosphere. Visit during regular shop hours – they are open every day!
Today, I took to the hills. I often get inspiration walking the mountain trails under the aspens. Monsoon season has begun (finally!) and the woods were lush. Santa Fe starts off most mornings with blue skies and bright sun; by mid-day clouds build up over the mountain ranges. These often lead to thunderstorms which end with rainbows as the sun re-emerges. (The monsoon torrent inspired one of the Autumnal Haiku pieces). My hike took me along Tesuque creek and its many tributaries, all gurgling and burbling – I had music the entire way up and down. Highlights from my walk included the tiny crescent moon in the blue, straight overhead, dozens of butterflies in the meadows, and a young buck on the mountain road, nonchalantly licking a salty spot. His antlers were the length of my forearm.
