Naughty Boy
This Original Collage, "Naughty Boy" was created for the juried exhibition at the Santa Fe Community Gallery for their 2018 Fall/Winter show The Exquisite Corpse.
The exhibition gets its name from a Victorian-era parlor game, although it is used frequently in modern times as a exercise for writing classes. The writing exercise has participants passing a folded paper from writer to writer, each one adding a line of verse without seeing the previous lines, until the end when the paper is unfolded and the resulting mysterious masterpiece is read out loud.
In this visual version, invited artists were assigned a body part (head, torso, legs), and given specifications of size - all the contributions were 20" x 10" . The artists were free to create anything in those bounds, not knowing what the other artists were providing. The artists brought their artwork to the gallery where the “bodies” were assembled by the gallerist and crew. It brings to mind the funny face flip books we had when we were kids. The results were unveiled at the opening reception.
I was assigned “Head” and my contribution is “Naughty Boy” a stylistic departure. I had fun with this one! The face is certainly cartoonish, and intriguing. The words on the left and right sides of the picture are derived from the communal cofessional rite of the Kol Nidre services.
