Artist Statement

A walk in the arroyo on a cold November morning, when the leaves had been wind-stripped from the deciduous poplars, i encountered mysterious bright balls nestled in a tangle of dead leaves.  I discovered them to be the yellow calabacitas, wild-growing squash, the only bright object in the frosty hued rift.

Poplars and Calabacitas

16 x 20
2014
Bright alone in the dried and windblown riverbed, the calabacitas bring a cheery hope to the end-time of autumn.
