Artist Statement

The title of the piece “Some May” refers not only to an idyllic spring day but also to a theme that has been on my mind recently – the linking of privilege and responsibility.  The words “Some May” are not a far leap from “Summa”, as in Summa cum Laude, an appropriate epithet for the person whom this picture honors, Marcia Hull, the Principal of Lincoln School of River Forest, Illinois, on some day in May.

Some May

18 x 12
2005
A school is not merely texts and tests; it is a place of learning about friendships and responsibilities, a place of dreaming grand visions, a haven to grow from Curious George to the understanding the double helix of DNA structure (both of which are included in the collage!). The image includes quotes from Thoreau, Thomas Jefferson, Robert Browning and Winnie-the-Pooh.
