Artist Statement

The Planet Mars made its closest swing towards Earth, at a time when our country was considering entry into war, as if we were under the influence of the war god. And yet, the prayers of the people around me were calling for peace. It is ironic that I was ejected from a solo show in Oak Park, Illinois on the basis of one word in this collage: "damn", in Admiral Farragut's famous quote, encouraging determined pursuit, in this case, peace.

Under the Influence

50 x 32 inches
2006
When we are under the sway of warmongers, our pursuit for peace must be relentless and deeply intended, or we may say with Claudius:  "Words fly up, thoughts remain below.  Words without thought never to heaven go."
