Summer Storm
Recent weeks have seen a flurry of flashing scissors and wind-lofted scraps of paper as commissioned collages have been completed and delivered, while new shows have been lined up and new venues opened.  Here is a roundup of the latest events, followed by a sneak peek at upcoming exhibitions this Fall.

People’s Choice

PictureMy Thoughts Be True
The Fuller Lodge Art Center in Los Alamos, New Mexico, announced the People’s Choice Award for one of my collages that was in the juried exhibition “Spirit Lines”.  The winning piece is “My Thoughts Be True” a large-scale collage, the second work my Elements series. (The first one depicts Water).  I am just thrilled to receive this award, which was selected by vote of the visitors to Fuller Lodge Art Center gallery.

Shadow Boxer

Next up at the Fuller Lodge Art Center is the group show “Shadow Boxer”.     Four of my original collages were juried into this exhibition.      This will be the public debut of one of my large pieces, “Summer Storm” which was inspired by the monsoon storms raging over the Sangre de Christos range near Santa Fe.     Another piece, “I Seek the Truth” from my Winged Creatures series, has been in only one show, in Oak Park, IL.      In “Letting Go”, I explored personal loss by way of planetary depiction.     The fourth piece, “Night Vision” is an apocalyptic scape, full of flaming chasms; but as I worked on it over the period of a year or so, Hope found its way into the picture.      “Night Vision” may be one of my darkest pieces at first glance, but it remains one of my favorites.

Shadow Boxer opens at the Fuller Lodge Art Center on October 12, with a reception that evening 5-7 pm and runs through November 15, 2018

Exquisite Corpse

PictureNaughty Boy (detail)
The poetizing group exercise “exquisite corpse” gets translated into the visual arts in the juried exhibition at the Santa Fe Community Gallery for their Fall/Winter show.  The writing exercise has poets passing a folded paper from writer to writer, each one adding a line of verse without seeing the previous lines, until the end when the paper is unfolded and the resulting mysterious masterpiece is read out loud.  In this version, invited artists were assigned a body part (head, torso, legs), and given specifications of size and so forth, and allowed to let their imaginations carry them forward.  I was assigned “Head” and my contribution is “Naughty Boy” a stylistic departure. I had fun with this one!  The artists will bring their artwork to the gallery where the “bodies” will be assembled by the gallerist and crew.  It brings to mind the funny face flip books we had when we were kids – the exhibition is sure to be an amazing and amusing assemblage.

Exquisite Corpse opens in the Santa Fe Community Gallery on October 26, with a reception that evening 5-7 pm and runs through January 15, 2019.

Hear the Echoes

PictureHear the Echoes
Early this year I was commissioned by New Mexico Arts, the state arts agency and a division of the Department of Culture, to create art for the poster they will use to promote Poetry Out Loud.  Poetry Out Loud is a national recitation competition for high school students created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. New Mexico presents the state finals in Santa Fe in March, and the poster with my art on it will be used to promote that event.  I created an original collage depicting an iconic New Mexico landscape and I embedded the names of poets who are associated with New Mexico and are included in the Poetry Foundation’s Anthology which the students use to select their poems for recitation.

To celebrate the launch of the poster, I will join the New Mexico Arts for an evening of art and poetry.  Local poets will read, I will display my original collage “Hear the Echoes”, and we will distribute the poster to the public.

The Poetry Poster Launch Party will be On October 26, 2018, 5-6 pm, at the Collected Works Bookstore.
