Blooms in June

It has been some long weeks since I updated my blog, but it was not for the lack of activity.  I have been busy with the completion of the collage pictured here.  Fourth in the series titled “Coral Reef”, this piece is larger in format, around 30” x 32”, and uses bold swaths of color crisscrossing, tumbling and twisting unpredictably.  I have been working at it diligently, both in my studio and at my station in the Railyard Artisans Market. I am excited to see it coming together so powerfully.

The blooming month of June is upon us, and in addition to seeing the flowers in my garden create a lush hideaway, I am excited about an upcoming event mid-June:  Bloomsday!  This is the day that Joyceans all over the world gather to read passages from James Joyce’s Ulysses, commemorating the moment when the fictional Leopold Bloom experienced a day in a life in Dublin, June 16, 1904.  In Santa Fe, our Joyce group, led by renowned actor Adam Harvey, is once again going to celebrate in our usual theatrical, musical, artsy style.  This year we are taking over George R.R. Martin’s Jean Cocteau Theater.  He has assembled a cast of local intellectuals and celebrities to perform selected parts of the novel.  Adam asked me and another artist from our group, Carla Cooper, to display our Joyce-inspired art for the evening.  I have two pieces – my portrait of Leopold Bloom based on a sketch by Joyce that I saw in Trieste, and the epic-sized “Bloomsday at Molly Malone’s” a work inspired by the 100th year celebration in Forest Park, Illinois.  The original collages of these two are still available as well as prints in various sizes. We always have fun, and this year will prove to be especially jolly: the Cocteau has a bar.  Guinness anyone?

Another global event is the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the launch of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.  The Summer of Love begins grandly. A remastered version of the album has been released recently and a new all Beatles radio station is now playing 24/7…all good things.  Michelle Joni Lapidos of The Fest for Beatles Fans invited me to create an event for her World Wide Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Filled Week – she kicked off with a colorful skipping event in Manhattan. My event was more modest in scope: Pepper Doodle.  At a specified time, people all over the world are invited to listen to the album, draw as whim takes them and then post the pix on the page.  The next one is scheduled for Sunday, May 28, 2017 at 8 pm EDT.
I will be at the Railyard Artisans Market most Sundays in the coming weeks.  I will be completing my piece and starting a new one.  I’d love to see you there!
Love and Peace
