Limitless Undying Love

My new solo exhibition, Universe in Pieces, opened on January 15 in the Portal Gallery of the Fuller Lodge Art Center in Los Alamos, New Mexico.  The exhibition includes over a dozen framed Original Collages featuring galactic images: planets, galaxies, nebulae, and star birth clouds, and imaginative views of the cosmos.
Some of these are large-scale presentations, measured in feet rather than inches, but they all invite the viewer in for a closer look.         The collages are layered with images and words, encouraging participation in the creative process.

“…we are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”
                                                                                                                         ~ Oscar Wilde

Under the Influence
One of the Original Collages is “Under the Influence” which is imaginative look at the close approach of Mars, and a contemplation on the causes of war and prayers for peace.       Come to the gallery and find out why this Collage had me and my work ejected from a gallery showing in Oak Park, Illinois on a subzero afternoon in January a few years back. True story!
A reception is planned for the evening of Friday, February 1, from 5 to 7 pm, in the Portal Gallery and I will be there to tell the “back story” of each piece. I drew on images produced by the Hubble telescope as my source for many of these, but in addition, I can tell you what inspired me in my process.  I will have several giclée prints on hand for purchase, as well as fun gift items like greeting cards, mouse pads, and journals.

The exhibition runs to March 2.
PictureBloomsday At Molly Malone's
I have another solo display in the works: an eclectic mix of my framed Original Collages will be exhibited in the City Hall of Española.    I am going to be hanging the pictures this week, so the selection depends upon the whimsy of the moment.    I am planning to bring my largest piece “Bloomsday at Molly Malone’s”    which includes the last page or so of Molly Bloom’s soliloquy that closes James Joyce’s Ulysses.    I also intend to display my provocative piece “Still Life” and others of less volatile nature.

Picture'Poetry Out Loud' Posters - Free!
In the wings are a few poetical events.

Bookworks, a lively independent bookstore in Albuquerque, is hosting a   Poetry Reading to promote the state’s
Poetry Out Loud poetry recitation competition.    We will invite local poets to read works of New Mexican poets, but a special treat will be that some of the high  school student competitors (school champions) will recite their   performance pieces.   The event will take place on the afternoon of Sunday February 24,
in the Bookworks location in Albuquerque’s North Valley, 4022 Rio Grande Blvd NW.

Two weeks later, on Sunday March 10, 1 pm, the actual recitation competition will take place in Santa Fe, at the St. Francis Auditorium.
Thirteen high school students from all over New Mexico will converge and compete to become the state champion.
The top achiever will go to Washington and compete with students from all over the country.
At both these events, we will be handing out *Free* promotional posters for Poetry Out Loud. I created the art for this poster, my Original Collage “Hear the Echoes," which is embedded with the names of 39 poets of New Mexico.    I will display the art and I will bring signed giclée prints as well.

So much of my work is out and about – Hooray!  I hope that many of you get out to these galleries to see them "in real life".  My studio is clear to start a new piece.  I am going to create Part Three of my Elements Series.  With Water and Fire already complete, can you guess what comes next?

God wants us to enjoy life. He longs for us to be joyful. But joyfulness and happiness are not the same thing.
